Erased

“Enormous effort has gone into assigning and ‘normalising’ sex: none has gone into asking whether this is necessary or beneficial” (“Statement on the Senate report 'Involuntary or coerced sterilisation of intersex people in Australia'” from Interaction.org.au). Some find it to be a social imperative to fit. It is within our human nature to crave a sense of belonging. Others cannot imagine a life not lived as their authentic self and within their own truth; the hope is that we may find others who accept us. Others still had the opportunity to choose taken away from them at birth. It is within our nature to both adapt and accept or fear and remove; some will never, and will never try to, understand, and they’ll seek the erasure of that which cannot be removed.

Erased is a visual contemplation on the attempted erasure of the intersex identity within government(s). A part of my longer series on gender called “Binary”.
